From Adachi's Universe: We start with our main protagonist, Shichimi, bidding farewell as he readies for his journey into Edo (on our Earth, Edo was the old name of Tokyo before it became the capital of Japan). His mother has just died, only leaving him a walnut and a request for him to go to his half-siblings. Shichimi bids farewell to a sternly old man, who is a firefighter. We can tell this from the symbol on his cloak. This symbol is also on Shichimi's cloak. Upon reaching the town of Edo, Shichimi meets a mysterious man, who ridicules the peace of the world as an illusion.

A man wakes up and realizes he's become a subject in a human experiment.

The human race is becoming more and more dependent on increasingly complex technology and machines; machines that inevitably break down. According to those lucky people who work at ATMT, the best job in the world is to be one of those special people who exists between the human world and the cyber world as "therapists", inserting their consciences into the broken machines via a proprietary interface to conduct the repairs. Such a job is not without immense risk and can result in a person being trapped in the device as an annoying, pitiful bug. Amongst the therapists, there exists a chosen few who have additional power and capabilities and who face the greatest risks and dangers - the Automata.

After his father died, Naruse Akira retreated into video games, and his mother retreated into alcohol. Naruse plays games almost all the time, getting him in trouble at his private school and worrying his childhood friend Hoju. He's incredibly good at war games because he is good at reading his opponents. One day, he ends up downloading a strange game called "Revolt" onto his phone. It's a game that has him orchestrate a revolution, and the graphics seem incredibly life-like. At the end, he learns that he was actually giving real-world orders, and that the game was part of a scouting process for a company that helps to run revolutions. Now they want him to be their commander and help them save the world.
