Welcome to the future. In tried-and-true sci-fi fashion, the date is given in a time system that we have no reference for, so I can't tell you how far into the future we are beyond saying that it is S.E. 156. Thirty years before our story begins, an ace space pilot by the name of M2 Rimstein was put into an experimental cold sleep until such time as he would be needed. That time is now. He is unfrozen and put in command of the Dance Mania unit of three superb pilots, though two are rookies: Stellasta von Argyll, Malloy Chihaya, and Cloud Neelsen. Accelerated training commences, and new ships and gadgets are brought out so that they will have victory over their enemy. Unfortunately, things go awry fairly soon when M2 is captured and brain-washed by a planet which sends him out to fight for the enemy. Malloy at first refuses to fight his commander, and then does so with the conviction that he can bring him home to the Great Carrier. Terui Chiaki is well aware that her classmate Ajikawa Yoshio is infatuated with her, despite her lack of interest in him as boyfriend material. Chiaki already has a significant other, so even if he were, it would be a moot point. Their enigmatic teacher, Mr. Yamada, observes this dynamic and presents an experiment: using his ability to create clones of people and objects, he duplicates Chiaki without her boyfriend being included in the copy's knowledge. The clone, named Koaki, is then the object of Yoshio's affections, as he attempts to woo her. Eventually, the original and clone will be remerged and whichever romantic bond is strongest - Chiaki's current boyfriend or Yoshio's newfound love - will assume dominance. Initially skeptical, both Chiaki and Koaki gradually begin to feel a stirring of emotion as they witness Yoshio's persistent pursuit.

In a universe where men and women are mortal enemies, Hibiki is captured by a band of female pirates. The group find themselves stranded with a super ship they dub the Nirvana and set out for the female home planet. Along the way, they discover the existence of the "The Harvest" and the possible destruction of both men and women. The manga differs greatly from the anime, with fewer characters and focusing more on the relationship between Dita and Hibiki. The second volume is a completely original story arc introducing a "black vandread" and its mysterious pilot.
