One lazy afternooon, as Dennis headed out to bboy practice, he noticed a series of posters lining a wall across the street. There were more of them when he looked around; in fact, they were everywhere. "Hmmm..." Dennis approached one of them. It was about a photo competition, and the winner gets to enjoy an all-expense trip to Japan and an exclusive tour around Shutter Technologies's main headquarters. "Big deal." Dennis wasn't into this sort of stuff. Sure, he enjoyed head-on competition from dance cyphers and sports, but online contests were just a waste of time for him. "Who wins these things anyway?" But after many, many weeks feigning ignorance despite everyone talking about it, he decided to give it a go. Shutter is, after all, one of the biggest companies in the world these days. That, and he had nothing better to do. "So why not?" Little did he know, that decision is going to change his life forever.

Every 30 years, a new princess is chosen from the Hime family to serve the Hayagami. The time has come again, but over these past years, records state not a single female has been born, save for one, the 15 year old Arata. The only problem is, Arata is actually a male! We then switch over to Arata, a 15 year old schoolboy from modern Japan who has incredible athletic ability but is plagued by bullies. After the Arata from ancient times runs into a mysterious forest and the Arata from modern times runs into an alleyway, the two mysteriously take each others place.
The story starts with college student Taichi, who comes from a not-so-well-off household and is desperately searching for work. He (literally) stumbles across fellow student Kouhei while on a job hunt, and is incredibly enticed by the delicious bento Kouhei has in hand. However, something seems a bit off about Kouhei – and when Taichi consults his friends about it, he gets an answer he really wasn't expecting: Kouhei is severely hearing impaired.
