At the beginning of A Link to the Past, a young boy named Link is awakened by Princess Zelda's telepathic message revealing that she is being held captive in the dungeon of Hyrule Castle. Against his uncle's advice to stay in bed, Link disobeys and follows his uncle to the castle. There, he discovers his uncle grievously injured. Before passing away, his uncle gives him a sword and shield and urges him to rescue Princess Zelda. Link navigates the castle to find Zelda's cell and frees her. Together, they escape through a secret passage in the sewers that leads to a sanctuary.
It is now a commonly observed trend in high-ranked parties to expel their own members due to their low stats. A young man named Aizen, who is dissatisfied with this status supremacism, has decided to gather these outcasts and establish his own guild with them. "Why kick them out when I can recruit them?" he exclaimed. A person's abilities extend beyond just their stats; the supposedly "weak" can grow into the "strong" by utilizing their latent abilities, their "hidden skills"! Thus begins the tale of a fantasy revolution led by the outcasts.

Sal Cooper, the most loyal and efficient shadow of the family, was sent out as a sacrificial pawn by the newly appointed head of the Cooper family during the major distribution meetings after representing the family in victorious battles. He became the object of abuse by the former subordinates who once served under him. After exerting all his efforts to kill those who had humiliated him and attempting to take Alan down with him, he discovered that as a child, he was chosen by the family to be the “shadow” and was enchanted with magic, unable to harm Alan and instead bearing all the injuries Alan suffered, thereby enhancing Alan’s own abilities. Learning from Alan that his entire life as a shadow was orchestrated, Sal reversed the magic’s effects and, through his own death, reclaimed everything Alan had taken from him, including talents and abilities. Although Alan survived, he lost his vitality and the ability to intimidate other families, leading to the downfall of the Cooper family.
