Partially based on the Mobile Suit Gundam F91 Crossbone Vanguard novel, the manga acts as a prequel to the events of Mobile Suit Gundam F91, depicting the Crossbone Vanguard and the residents of Frontier IV prior to the Cosmo Babylonia War during Universal Century (UC) 0123.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray (機動戦士ガンダムSEED ASTRAY, Kidō Senshi Gundam SEED ASTRAY) is a side story manga set in the Cosmic Era timeline that takes place concurrently with Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
