The plot revolves around an intranet-based online game (D.P. = Danger Planet) which is played using V.P. (Virtual Puppet). VP is literally an avatar which a person uses to in the game. However, unlike avatars (characters) from current online games, a VP is allowed to be modified (modded) by a person if he or she has sufficient programming skills.

Aside of being forced to team up with Junpei Yamagashi, a young police officer obsessed with women and whether or not he's balding, he also needs to defend himself against hostility towards him. Taking command of the terrorists, Lelouch adopts the alias "Zero" and begins his rebellion to crush Britannia once and for all. However, his greatest friend soon becomes one of his most troubling enemies when Suzaku becomes the pilot of Britannia's new test model Knightmare, the Lancelot.
