The British Museum in the C.M.B. story, which had custody of the recondite scientific curiosities and artefacts collected by explorer/adventurers and stored in a Wunderkammer, decided to study the dusty arcana in the 19th century. Three investigators dubbed the "Magi" were appointed to do the research, each given a ring embossed with the letters C.M.B. Fast-forward to present-day Japan where Sakaki Shinra is the curator of a museum of oddities. He now has possession of the C.M.B. rings, indicating that he has been granted the status of guardian of knowledge like the Magi that preceded him.

She makes Kasuga recall the specific events and hence the enchantment is broken, not without the grimoire telling him that Hijiri is not dead. Kasuga decides that his only alternative will be to become a magus himself therefore Hijiri could be rescued by him and he therefore joins a secret school for mages that copes with magic dilemmas all over the world, the Royal Biblia Academy. There he is introduced together with the Trinity Seven, seven powerful female mages who are at the top of the respective disciplines (Lilith being one of them) who will aid him in his aim to become a strong wizard and discover the truth about Hijiri along with the Black Sun. He soon discovers that another of the Trinity Seven, Arin, looks almost exactly like his lost cousin although she shows a wholly different character.

Billy Bat is a comic-in-a-comic and the real protagonist is a Japanese-American artist named Kevin Yamagata who draws Billy Bat for "Marble Comics". Shortly after they transition to the artist in his studio with his assistant, two actual detectives, who look like Laurel and Hardy in Dick Tracy era suits and trench coats, knock on the door and appropriate Kevin's room for the purpose of conducting surveillance on a room in an adjacent building. One of the detectives, the skinny “Laurel”, sees Kevin's work and it turns out he's a Billy Bat fan. The other chubby "Hardy" detective picks up a page and says that the characters look familiar and accuses Kevin of translating an old "Jap" comic. As Hardy remembers the comic he thinks Kevin is ripping off, we make another Urasawaesque time jump to 1949 Tokyo and the chapter ends.
